"Paintings are an emotional response that is visually tangible, and when viewed by others they create yet new responses. When viewing paintings from great painters of the past or present, I am always drawn to the imagery, talent, message, and respond to what I see. When outdors and I see a scene or subject that captures my interest, it's because of an emotional response to what is before me, what I feel. The wind, the sun, the cold, the fresh bear tracks I crossed moments before are all a part of it. How I apply the paint, what color I mix, how I compose the image are responses to what I see and what I want to convey."

"One of the things I enjoy the most from a finished painting are the responses generated from others that view it. If I've done my job, the viewer also senses and participates in what I experienced and finally captured. If the grandness of a vista, the bite of the cold or the brightness of the sun is conveyed then I've achieved my intent - sharing in someway what I experienced. The emotional response that I experienced now continues on in others and lives on."

BIO -

Growing up in the north woods of Wisconsin, the youngest of six sons from a family of outdoor lovers. Both an appreciation as well as an unending interest in the outdoors has always been a part of Joe's life. The desire to explore and experience the seldom and little touched locals of nature began in his early teens. Summers were often spent exploring the many navigable and not so navigable waters of northern Wisconsin, Minnesota and Upper Michigan in his trusty canoe.

Trained as both a graphic artist as well as a fine artist, over the past 20 plus years Joe has worked as an advertising art director and finally as a freelance illustrator/graphic artist. As an independent illustrator/graphic artist, Joe’s clients have ranged from small local businesses to large international companies. During this period Joe received numerous awards for his design and illustration work. The combination of his profession as well as his love of the outdoors has taken him into many remote and untamed areas of Alaska. Equally comfortable with a backpack on, a paddle or flyrod in hand, Joe has managed to venture to many of the wild places of Alaska that most will never see nor experience.

In 2003 Joe returned to his beginings as an artist - oil painting once again, with the encouragement of his biggest fan and supporter his wife Patty-Joyce. Joe currently hikes the mountains and navigates the rivers of Alaska with a portable easel and digital camera, hunting inspiration from the limitless resource available in the remote backcountry of Alaska. The paintings you see in the website are some of the fruits of this pursuit.

Joe is currently an active member of the Alaska Plein Air Painters group, juried member and Vice President of the Alaska Artist Guild, co-founder and board member of the Art for Alaska Parks competition. Joe's paintings have appeared in a number of group shows by the following organizations as well as in a solo show at Alaska Pacific University.

Constantly seeking to improve and associate with other artist, Joe has had training and input from such notable landscape artists/instructors as Jeanie Mackenzie, Scott Christensen, John Poon and Robin Hall.
